Nicole Maharaj's "The Beauties of Writing"

Hi Loves,
I hope everyone is doing fantastically! I have a little treat for you; my friend Nicole Maharaj wrote a wonderful article on blogs and I would love to share it with you. Enjoy! And, tell us what your think.

For those who have spent the majority of their childhood and their teens indulging in books, whether they are romance, gothic, mystery or suspense, writing their own books is just the very next step. The beauty of writing is that you can craft your own worlds, worlds of magic, and angst. Where the princes save the day, and the princesses are normal people like you or me.
As a child I spent most of my time going through all the books within both my library, and my school’s books. I found myself being drawn to the supernatural, to heroic quests, stories full of magic, of Kings and Queens, of magical worlds. Throwing myself into different worlds of mystery, magic and romance. Of mystical creatures and heroic quests.  By the age of thirteen I found myself writing my own stories, of knights of armor and runaway carriages.
As I grew up I found myself delving into the gothic romance side of things, finally in my last year of high school I found myself sitting down and crafting my first novel, a story of a runaway prince, demons, a vengeful mother, and a foul murder. In the five years it took me to write the novel I learned more about creating dramatic characters and crafting different worlds by borrowing and taking from the people surrounding me.
The beauty of writing for so long is that you get a better understanding of your characters and what you want them to portray in the novel.  The writing process for me is one of reflection, I don’t just sit down and write, I see the story unfolding behind my eyes and I write it down as I see it. A lot of the writing I do comes from experience and what I want to portray in the book.
Not all writers are inspired by experience. “I get my inspiration from dreams, dreams at night, dreams with my eyes open,” said Jess Henderson, a fantasy writer.   The beauty of writing is that without fail you can always get another idea. The only bad thing about it is that without fail you will find yourself trying to figure out if there is a way to include your new idea with your old one.
In my experience I have found that in order to incorporate the ideas that I have, I need to create new characters and new stories within the main story to use the idea.  Jess also has trouble with the concept of getting new ideas in the middle of writing. “I always end up getting halfway through and getting a new idea. I try not to start something new, and try to finish what I’ve started first.” Henderson said.
Writers for different genres have different ways of writing, as a gothic writer I use various models to display my story. My story takes place mainly in a modern city atmosphere, of the nightlife in the city, while also having some Victorian influences when I switch back to the world of Vemos, my fiction-made world, that in it’s own way is my take on hell.
On the other hand Henderson’s novels focuses mainly in time period of the 1600’s to the beginning of time (really early in the world), it is set more in the time of Horses and arrows, herbs and magic, shape shifters, cannibals, vampires and werewolves together and generally people who can control fire.  Henderson takes her inspiration from everywhere, something similar to me, because I also use the outside influences to push my writing along. Fantasy writers like gothic writers, make their own worlds. Worlds that have different creatures roaming around, different powers and beings. Humans in the story live different lives from the one we do. That’s the beauty of the written word; you can make your own world and rules that govern that world.
For writers one of the most important things for a writer to do is to create a fan base. For writers now in this generation the way writers do this, especially when they are now getting into the publishing scene is by blogging. Blogging has evolved from something that was used as something for people to let their feelings out on different topics of discussion, to a diverse social networking tool. Not only does it give you an outlet for expressing yourself but you can also use it to showcase some of your written work and to introduce, future works as well.
“I used to think blogs were silly, but it’s really more a way for people to write,” said Brittany Sammy a blogger for Le shopper: A britique, a fashion blog.  “I believe blogs are very necessary, you can get a lot of information from blogs,” said Sammy.  For me blogs are more a way for me to express my thoughts on things I watch on TV, Movies, and other things that happen in school and in my writing as well.

ORANGE is the New Year!

With the new year comes many new great things! One being the new winter colour pallet that we’ll be seeing in every mall display till 2013. The colour of 2012 as created by the fashion conscious and executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman is titled, Tangerine Tango. Eiseman and her colour curious gurus define this reddish- orange combination as a “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive [colour]; Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it.” It’s a curious thing giving a colour so much attention, but Tangerine Tango has already been seen in Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer 2012 Runway Previews from Ellie Tahari to Charlotte Ronson. So, when it comes to what to watch out for this winter, here are some wonderful inspiration pieces that will have you feeling and seeing ORANGE.

1) Shoes: One can expect to see orange embellishes on day-to-day footwear. From a Tangerine toe, to a bit of a stripe- the punch of colour will really make you smile. Our inspiration pieces are a patent flat and a stripy runner, which allows you to really embrace the new year one step at a time. It’s as if you’re walking into 2012! Some may say orange shoes are not meant for everyday, ‘the colour is just too BIG’. Well, what I respond to that is that it’s not like the entire shoe is orange. For those who are a tad resilient to the new fad I say let the punch of colour speak for itself. I’d pair an orange embellished number with a more muted outfit- there should always be a “Power Piece” within your outfits and for one day just make it all about your shoes. It’s a new year so step out of the box wearing something orange.
Found at GEOX, Foot Locker, and Nine West

2) Jackets: When I think of winter jackets, the first thing to come to mind is a puffy Canada Goose, or a politically correct pea coat. I would like us to go one further and instead of the average winter jacket lets brighten up our wardrobes and the hazy winter days with a punch of tangerine goodness like our inspiration jacket. This is a very simple cotton, warm, and winter friendly find, which gives you no excuse to not try it out. The simple cut, collar, and cuffs are always in style which allows you to not only take it into 2013 but also use it as a statement piece when you decide to just throw on a sweater and pair of tights this winter.
Similar pieces found at The Bay, H&M, and Banana Republic

3) Nail Polish: Now, this is a very easy way to embrace the new year without breaking the bank or investing in a piece that you feel is not right for you, NAIL POLISH! I love changing up my nails any time I get the chance, and with so many tangerine, orange, and ruby-esk colours on those little nail polish shelves, you have no excuse. Also, the colour orange has been proven to make you happy because it is such a fun and ‘passionate’ colour. I love that your nails can be seen as confident, so if you do put yourself in the box of unexperimental and simply a GAP baby, I say try a punch of colour on your nails and get back to me. This little indulgence will have you smiling all the way to final exams, and the best part is it is easy on, easy off!
Found at Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart, American Apparel

4) Toppers: Orange you glad you wore that beautifully bright and vivacious top today?
Bad joke, but the substance is there. Wearing a orange top, whether it’s a sweater, tee, or simple shirt, not only makes you stand out, but adds a bit of a glow to your face. I like to think of it as getting the JLo glow, without having the JLo budget. Because this colour is so in demand, and that the easiest things for stores to sell are tops, you can now find a simply designed topper in your favorite materials. The go to fabric is cotton, but if you feel like treating yourself you can always go for a fuzzy comfy cashmere. Because the fabrics are died however, I do suggest you wash your items with like colours in cold water. It’ll keep your clothing fresh, and the colour as bright as when you first bought it.
Found at The Gap, Forever 21, and H&M

5) Purse & Cosmetic Bag Combos: YAY, the time has come to talk about every girl’s favorite part of fashion, the handbag. It doesn’t get any better than finding a great piece, than finding one in the must have colour of the season. Orange and tangerine go hand in hand with discovering a way to spice up the one thing every girl needs in order to survive. And, the best part about grabbing a new handbag is that you can’t really have just one anyways so, you have to invest in order to stay current. There are great pieces out there from a shoulder bag which is the most common handbag, to a satchel which I think is the perfect student purse because it keeps your hands free and stays out of the way. Also, like your nails and shoes, having a punch or even an embellishment of orange can really spruce up your outfit without being too forward. So, if you’re not a fan of colour or just the colour orange, this is a good way to test your theory because even if you’d never wear a orange sweater or jacket, with a hint of orange on your handbag it shows that you’re embracing the colour without letting it run your wardrobe. And, when beautiful leather is dyed orange, there is nothing better! Orange makes the best looking leather, so if you do find yourself searching for a new handbag, keep orange leather combinations in mind.
Found at H&M, Coach, Forever21, and Aldo Accessories

6) Technology: When it comes to the hottest new tech savvy accessories, I think first and foremost on how sleek and useful the item is. Orange and Tangerine Tango, has found its place even in Best Buy! The colour is so attractive and loud; why not match it with one of the coolest new gadgets out there? From cameras, to gadget cases, there is no way of ignoring this fad. And, if you want to add that punch of orange on your new cell case without literally buying a bright orange case- you can always get a skin printed out at your mall’s skin kiosk. As an example, I love that my laptop case has orange in it, but it’s not solely orange- showing that I’m embracing the colour while combining it with other colours I enjoy. What I mean to say is that you don’t have to be head over heals for orange, you just need to give it a chance. And, there is no better way of doing that then adding hints of it on your most prized possession- your cell!
Found at The Apple Store, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart

7) Citrus Cosmetics: There is nothing yummier than a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice, or is there? Yes, it does get better because nowadays you can wear the scent of your favorite passion fruit. Also, citrus scents released from fruits and perfumes come from esters evaporating in the air. I love that I can keep that scent on me for hours without ‘re- spritzing’ just because the esters of the citrus are a heavier scent; I like to think of them as sweeter though. From body washes, to hand creams, even to perfumes- the time is now to start smelling as good as you look. And, the scent of citrus and orange is a great indicator to the opposite sex that you’re interested and looking for companionship. The aromatherapy scent meaning of orange is love, companionship, and relationship- and seeing that Valentine’s Day is less than a month away I think it’s time to start ‘spritzing’.
Found at Wal-Mart, Fruits of Passion, and The Body Shop

8) Outerwear Accessories: It’s time to get your knitwear and cotton on! The best part of wearing luminous Tango Tangerine is that it makes you feel like summer, sun, and the beach. Wearing this colour around your face really brightens you up from your complexion to your attitude. The colour orange makes you feel alive because it’s an awakening colour, an example being the rising of the sun in the morning. Orange is all around us for a purpose, the colour means “action”, thus it inspires the body to act, move, and exercise. And, as Elle Wood would put it, “Exercising releases endorphins, and endorphins make you happy!” So, bundle up in you favorite new orange mitts, scarf, and hat on those chilly winter mornings, and it might put some pep in your step. There is nothing like a winter jog right?
Found at The Bay, H&M, and The Gap

9) Scents Make Sense: Yummy! Candles are not only a great way to brighten up a room, but they’re a great way to decorate without actually buying something that you’ll never use. The delicious scent of citrus engulfing your household will be something that I bet you’ll thank me for. The scent inspires happiness, activity, and that wonderful sense of sun, sand, beach! These little doohickeys are great little purchases that will make you feel sensationable in the long run, so why not try it out? You can find a great orange citrus scent in many forms: room sprays, oils, and candles, so you’ll definitely be able to find your perfect match.
Found at The Body Shop, Fruits of Passion, and The Bay

10) Jewelry: Bring on the fun and find yourself some great orange pieces that will have you swooning! The colour inspires the mind to take action, so when you wear it around a possible suitor he might well, take action! Think of this as a pre- Valentine’s Day experiment, so grab a few bangles, some glistening orange earrings, possible an orange pendent necklace and see if your crush can take the hint. Don’t be afraid to layer your orange pieces with other colours, blues are always complementary and would do the job because it’s fact that these two colours can’t not look good together. The thing with wearing a coloured jewelry though is that there is a right way and there is a wrong way. You can layer pieces together, but I like to wear coloured jewelry very simply and on its own. If you’re going to wear a charming orange pendant, make sure it’s your focus and commit to it being your focal point. You can wear some great coloured pieces together which is always lovely and makes you feel like summer is on its way. Be sure to complement your outfit with jewelry sets. Girls don’t do this enough, but when your pieces all match, the earrings, necklace, bracelet and ring, it shows your understanding of classic style. Mixing and matching is great, but when it comes to colour I think it’s loud enough to wear simple matching pieces to make a statement. And, if you are going to mix it up, don’t forget to also mix different textures and material because it’s a great way of adding dimension to an otherwise ‘flat’ ensemble.
Found at H&M, Forever21, Bitter Sweet, and Aldo Accessories

2012 is the year of the dragon, the year the world survived its end (apparently), and now the year you decided to embrace orange, or Tangerine Tango as the colour geniuses at the Pantone Colour Institute would put it.  I say, embrace the warmth of orange, and do what you can to include it in your day-to-day ensembles, if anything it’s your way of hooking that crush of yours on time for Valentine’s Day.

What A Grace-Ful Princess.

As I walked in the Tiff|BellLightbox in Toronto I was unquestionably sure that I was in the right place. The Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, lined the walls of the venue with her timeless beauty and grace, which undeniably illuminated the now palace-esk Tiff|BellLightBox. Yup, this was definitely where I wanted to be. For those of you interested the Grace Kelly exhibit, “Grace Kelly: From Movie Star to Princess,” will be at the Tiff|BellLightbox from November 4th to January 22nd. So, you have enough time to do a little bit of research on the damsel, who is known for marrying Prince Rainier III of Monaco and being featured in numerous Hitchcock cinematic treasures, before you head on downtown. Oh, and as an added bonus students (showing a student ID) also receive discounted entry. But, I’m very sure that all you fashion conscious guys and gals would love to attend due to the fact that Grace Kelly was known for her amazingly unique and classic style. She was no wallflower, but simply a muse to designers like Dior’s Marc Bohan who would seem- fully create ball gowns for the princess, Coco Chanel who also designed her classic tweed suits for Kelly, which were showcased in the exhibit, and Hermes who named the ‘Kelly Bag’ after her. Yes, the exhibit is a must, and if anything it is an excuse to lose yourself in the life of a real princess.

Due to regulations, pictures were not permitted in the exhibit however; you can always visit Tiff.net to see the nostalgic garments that had guests swooning. The walls of the exhibit were lined in Grace Kelly memorabilia from her movie posters, to her hand written letters. I was even able to catch a glimpse of a cheque made out to Grace Kelly from Paramount Studios for $8.25.Throughout the exhibit are cases full of articles, stills from films, photographs of Kelly, and her bare essentials which ranged from lace gloves, to oval sunglasses. And, one must not forget the family videos, documented news videos, and classic clips from her films that also glazed the walls of the exhibit. If you were lucky, you could even grab a seat facing the screens and sit there for hours on end watching the videos. However, this exhibit was very much in demand opening day so I do suggest possibly making your way to see Kelly’s exhibit with enough time to really take in all that it has to offer.

A favorite of mine in the exhibit was the ‘air conditioning- free’ room that held the most divine wedding dress, aside from my mothers, that I’ve ever seen in person. Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III in nothing less than the most beautifully crisp, lace, and fairy-tale dress that every eye has to study from top to bottom. From the lace sleeves, to the multiple bow lined spine, the dress was impeccable and the veil attached to her lovely tiara looked like a band of white flowers. I was in awe, and very much head over heals for this stunner. Another favorite was Kelly’s tiara, which was not big, nor small, it was perfectly tasteful and not at all overdone- as like Grace Kelly’s style. And, how could I forget about the shoes! Each garment, from the dresses to the suits, were accompanied by matching footwear. Grace Kelly’s heels were not sky-high but probably looked as good as they felt. All her shoes were custom designed and matched her outfits perfectly, and were set in a slightly pointed toe. Her shoes really spoke of her era. She was a sensation in both cinema and culture, but her shoes represented a woman who simply wanted to look stylish while at the same time being able to stroll from event to event.

This exhibit really had a girl, like myself, thinking. Grace Kelly hit the height of her fame from 1951 to 1956 while completing a total of 11 films in that period. She also won the 1954 ‘Best Actress’ Academy Award for her role in The Country Girl. Soon after, Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco at age 26, and between 1957 to 1965, Kelly and Rainer had three beautiful royal babies: Caroline Louise Marguerite, Princess of Hanover; Albert II, Prince of Monaco; and Princess Stephanie Marie Elisabeth. After a lovely, but short life with her loved ones and a career repertoire with the top directors, Grace Kelly passed away in 1982 due to a stroke, which caused her to crash her car into and down the Roc Agel mountainside in Monaco. The Princess died at age 52, but had a life that feels as though she lived a hundred years. Kelly’s somewhat short life was extraordinary and nothing less than the fairytales that we grown up with; she was an actress, princess, muse, and mother. And, is now an icon, timeless beauty, and inspiration.

Through the Field with Natalia Cuervo

The intricacies of her work, Corvus, are not only show stopping, but would have any Arts major ask, ‘Could you teach me how to do that?’ My time with the creative Natalia Cuervo was one of great feats. Not only did we shoot on location in a field of industrial towers, but we also motored back to the photo guru, Tishan Baldeo’s studio for a quick interview. It was a lot of fashion-fun, which is as good as an apple a day.
Natalia with her lovely model Sarah
Natalia’s love for design all began as a child sewing clothes for her dolls, and snatching extra material and fabric to create a little something special. And, after moving to Toronto from Columbia with her parents and attending the ever so posh Ryerson University for design, Natalia shows how far she has come from her mother’s scraps. The challenging and competitive nature of Ryerson only helped to strengthen Natalia’s technique as a designer. She explains, “You can make [the experience at Ryerson] as hard or as easy as you want it to be, because your [success and progress] is on you.”
Hannah
Sarah
Coming from Columbia at age 14, helped to influence the spirited designer’s aesthetic. And, growing up around fellow artists in her family as well as the culture of Columbia allowed Natalia to constantly be surrounded by creativity; which keeps her craft close to home. Her innovative mind is also motivated by everyday variables, as well as from art history, technology & architecture, and science. Such attributes are very present in her weaving and sculpting of raw silk and different textiles. The designs from the shoot were more so inspired by turn of the century European art, and the life of each artist. Such pieces were also created to support Miss Cuervo in her application and second place win in “The Art of Fashion”: a competition which has been held for 10+ years that has designers apply their creations in summary and response of the competition’s picked theme of the year. Thus, after the theme is picked, the applicants have a few months to complete their deigns, and those applicants chosen to partake in the competition show their creations at Toronto’s art festival, “Scotiabank’s Nuit Blanche.” The creative Natalia won the opportunity to have the public choose her designs as “Best Exhibit”. Natalia has also strengthened her repertoire as a Canadian designer by partaking in Ryerson’s “Mass Exodus”, the graduating class fashion show, and at Toronto’s “Alternative Fashion Week.”
Sarah
Sarah
Natalia’s innovative mind, and I must say, eloquently spoken voice and pleasant attitude, shows to be as mighty of an attribution to her success as her technique and craft. Thus, it is undeniable that Cuervo’s future goals, “to own [her] own company [under her growing label] Corvus,” will inevitably lead to her to that fairytale ending.
